Marshall feels like he and Eli could be a perfect Fitz

- BY JOHN HEALY

Eli Manning is no Ryan Fitzpatrick, at least according to Brandon Marshall.

As the Giants’ new wide receiver continues to develop a rapport with his quarterback, he would not quite call Manning the best he’s ever had.

“He’s got a long way to go to dethrone Ryan Fitzpatrick,” Marshall said with a smile. “He’s got a long way to go, so we’ll see.”

The response drew laughs but Marshall is with the Giants to win a Super Bowl and the 33-year-old said Manning at quarterback was the No. 2 reason he signed with them (with stability in ownership being No. 1).

Yet as the Giants enter Week 1 against the Cowboys there is still some doubt on whether or not Marshall and Manning have had enough work together to translate into results on the field.

Marshall had just one target from Manning in a game this preseason — an incomplete pass that resulted in the veteran receiver injuring his shoulder and missing a week of practice as well as the following game against the Jets.

Marshall confirmed he is healthy now and ready to play this Sunday but questions still linger about his on-field chemistry with Manning.

“Brandon and I will be on the same page,” Manning said. “Again, there’s always a learning curve. … It doesn’t mean we’ll complete every pass that I throw to him, but we’ve gotten a lot of work and communicate all the time about different things.”

That communication is something that Marshall has spoken highly of throughout preseason and did so again on Monday, calling Manning’s approachability the No. 1 thing that has stood out to him.

“We had a route last week, we hit it, we’re in the red zone and scored and I went to him and said ‘what did you think about it?’” Marshall said. “He told me how he felt and he asked ‘what do you think?’ I think it was off a little bit…and he’s like ‘yeah, I could’ve done this, and this and that’ and I was like, wow. It’s impressive for me to give him that feedback and for him to receive that.”

Marshall’s goals extend beyond making the playoffs. He says he wants to “win it all.”

But with the Giants entering the season with high expectations, Marshall knows better than to assume things will go according to plan.

“I’ve been on some great teams in Chicago, Denver, even with the Jets we had to go up to Buffalo and win and you know, this preseason reminded me you can’t just show up,” he said. “We had a chance to go out their with the (first team) against Cleveland and I was out there and it didn’t click for us. So we have a lot

of work to do.”
