Pelosi: It’s new day for Dems
WASHINGTON— House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi predicted Friday that Democrats will have increased leverage on immigration after cutting a debt and disaster aid deal with the President.
A package of Harvey aid money, a short-term increase in the debt ceiling and continued government spending passed Friday 316-90, with all 90 “no” votes coming from Republicans.
Pelosi said she makes “no apology” for working across the aisle with a President disdained in her home state of California, and noted it could lead to good news for the 800,000 young people whose futures in the United States are up in the air following Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Pelosi said Republicans are going to have a hard time passing other upcoming spending bills on their own, and will have to turn to Democrats again.
“It increases our leverage,” Pelosi said. “It gives us a possibility for passing the DREAM Act” as an amendment to spending legislation. That would give permanent protections to the Dreamers, people who were illegally brought to the U.S. as children.
