Tribe wins 16th in row; Red Sox roll

Edwin Encarnacio­n and the Cleveland Indians won their 16th straight game, extending the best streak in franchise history by beating the visiting Baltimore Orioles 5-0 Friday night.

Encarnacio­n hit a three-run homer in the first inning into some trees in center field next to Heritage Park, the team’s hallowed area where past Cleveland stars and teams are immortaliz­ed.

l Drew Pomeranz did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and gave up two runs over six, Mookie Betts hit a three-run home run and the Boston Red Sox routed the Tampa Bay Rays 9-3 at Fenway. l It’s sexy time. The Minnesota Twins are honoring their starter Bartolo Colon, who’s been considerin­g retirement, with their “Big Sexy Night” on Sept. 15 at Target Field.

—Stefan Anderson l Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy, out nearly three months with a broken right wrist, has been activated from the 60-day disabled list.Hardy was hit by a pitch on June 18 and placed on the DL the following day. He is batting .211 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 64 games and recently completed a minor league rehab assignment.

BERRY RUPTURES ACHILLES

Chiefs safety Eric Berry ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s victory in New England and the three-time All-Pro will miss the remainder of the season.

Berry was hurt while covering Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski on a passing route. He hobbled at the end of the play and sat on the turf, and it took a cart to remove him from the field.

l He was all heart. Now Jon Dorenbos needs surgery to fix his.

Dorenbos, the veteran NFL long snapper who gained national fame last year as a finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” is having emergency heart surgery to repair a life-threatenin­g aortic aneurysm.

“It’s a pretty serious condition that will require surgery,” head coach Sean Payton said.

Dorenbos, 37, was traded to New Orleans last week from Philadelph­ia. The heart condition was discovered by Saints doctor John Amoss during a physical.

— Evan Grossman l J.J. Watt is being honored by the NFL Players Associatio­n after raising more than $29 million for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Watt was named the NFLPA’s Community MVP for his work in the days since the hurricane and flooding devastated Houston and much of southeast Texas.
