Gov: I’ll fight for Columbus
GOV. CUOMO says he has no problem with Mayor de Blasio’s commission to review what to do with the city’s potentially controversial statutes — but reiterated Saturday he will fight to preserve the Christopher Columbus monument in Columbus Circle.
“That’s his business — he can set up whatever commission he thinks is necessary,” Cuomo said at the city Labor Day Parade.
“My only comment was on Christopher Columbus and the respect for the Italian-American heritage and the contribution of Italian Americans. And that’s what the Christopher Columbus statute is really about.”
De Blasio has not taken a public position on the Columbus statue. In the wake of last month’s violent hate rally in Charlottesville, Va., over the removal of a Confederate statute, De Blasio last week appointed a committee to recommend guidelines on how to “address monuments seen as oppressive and inconsistent with the values of New York City.”
