FDNY hero may get ferry name
A PUSH TO name a Staten Island ferry after 9/11 hero Firefighter John Chipura is gathering steam.
More than 11,000 people have signed a Change.org petition to name one of three new ferry boats launching in 2019 after the smoke eater, U.S. Marine and former NYPD cop.
A second petition is being sent around city firehouses and signed by firefighters and civilians.
Chipura, 39, was assigned to Engine 219/Ladder 105 in Brooklyn when the Twin Towers collapsed. At the time, he was engaged to be married.
“John died in service of this city,” said Chipura’s brother, FDNY Capt. Gerard Chipura.
“Wouldn’t it be nice that, posthumously, he can still service the city by taking people back and forth to work?”
