In your face, South Dakota!

- BY KATE FELDMAN

AFTER YEARS of misses, North Dakota finally has its first Miss America.

Cara Mund bested 50 other contestants in a glitzy show from Atlantic City on Sunday night to win the title of Miss America 2018. The 23-yearold Brown University graduate is not only the first Miss North Dakota to wear the tiara, she’s also the first from her state to make the top five, People magazine reported.

Mund, who has been accepted to law school at the University of Notre Dame, credited her mother as her greatest role model.

“She’s been diagnosed with cancer three times,” she said during the competition. “Despite the circumstances, she’s always told me, ‘You can’t control the cards you’re dealt, but you can control the hand.’ ”

In the interview portion of the competition, Mund was asked her opinion on the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.

“I do believe it’s a bad decision,” Mund said. “There is evidence that climate change is existing. So whether you believe it or not, we need to be at that table, and I just think it’s a bad decision on behalf of the United States.”

Mund will receive a $50,000 scholarship, a sixfigure salary during her reign and an appearance contract with Dick Clark Productions.

Miss Missouri Jennifer Davis was first runnerup, followed by Miss New Jersey Kaitlyn Schoeffel, District of Columbia’s Briana Kinsey and Miss Texas Margana Wood.
