Chuck, Tish say Columbus must stay
THE STATUE of Christopher Columbus at Columbus Circle should stay put, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.
“It should stay,” Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters at his Manhattan office. “No one’s perfect, and he discovered America.”
Mayor de Blasio on Friday unveiled a committee to review monuments on city property viewed as “oppressive,” which may include Columbus.
Some activists want the monument removed because of Columbus’ brutal treatment of indigenous people. De Blasio has declined to weigh in.
Public Advocate Letitia James also said Sunday, on the John Catsimatidis AM 970 radio show, that the statue “needs to remain.”
