Jailer beaten by gang punks
A CITY JAIL officer was kicked and punched in the face by five alleged gang members during a bloody brawl on Rikers Island, according to a jail report.
Correction Officer Ryan Basso was attacked by four members of the Bloods gang inside the George Motchan Detention Center at 9 p.m. Monday, internal Correction Department records show.
Basso — on the job less than a year — suffered cuts on his face, left shoulder and left knee, the incident report says.
Another officer tried to break up the beatdown by using pepper spray.
But the spray “did not make contact with the inmates,” according to department records.
“This is just another example of the feckless and ineffective policies of the de Blasio administration,” fumed Sidney Schwartzbaum, who used to represent top jail bosses. The inmates, who now face gang assault and other charges, are all younger than 21 — meaning they can’t be placed in solitary under new rules instituted under de Blasio.“These inmates, because they are 21 and under, after they are rearrested they are brought back to Rikers and still get commissary, visits and watch TV,” said Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.
“There are no repercussions,” he added.
