JuDGE: LET’S PuSH BACK DEADLINE
WEEKS AHEAD of a looming deadline that could endanger the status of more than 150,000 DACA recipients, a Brooklyn federal judge leaned on government lawyers to rethink the date. Between President Trump trying to work a deal on Dreamers’ status and a fast-approaching renewal deadline for certain Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, Judge Nicholas Garaufissuggested Thursday it made sense to hit the pause button on a Oct. 5 deadline. The judge spoke during a court date on a Queens Dreamer’s lawsuit challenging the demise of DACA — a program shielding some 800,000 young people from deportation. Justice Department lawyer Brett Shumate told Garaufis the October deadline affecting a portion of the Dreamers is still on the books, but the Department of Homeland Security was “actively considering” a date change.
