Blaz says scrap the Elex Board
IT’S TIME TO rethink the Board of Elections, Mayor de Blasio said Thursday.
“I think the Board of Elections’ time has come and gone,” Hizzoner said of the beleaguered board, two days after the Democratic primary. “I think it’s time for fundamental change.”
The criticism comes after the board changed more than 20% of its polling sites since 2016 — meaning 200,000 voters had new voting spots this year, WNYC reported. In many cases, the board did not abide by a City Council law requiring an old polling place include a sign indicating where the new one is, WNYC reported.
The board has argued it isn’t bound by city law, since it was established under state law.
De Blasio said he’d look to change state law to overhaul the board, “professionalize the agency and give the executive director a professional role not dependent on a political board.”
