Eclipse? Mnu gotta be nuts
TREASURY SECRETARY Steve Mnuchin says he has too much New York cool to care about a solar eclipse.
Mnuchin offered the blindingly blunt remark in response to the accusation that he used a government plane to fly to Kentucky last month for the purpose of viewing the celestial spectacle.
“People in Kentucky took this stuff very seriously. Being a New Yorker, I don’t have any interest in watching the eclipse,” Mnuchin said Thursday at a conference sponsored by Politico — apparently oblivious to the eclipse-fever that struck the Big Apple. The trip to the Bluegrass State — which initially sparked controversy over an Instagram post by his actress wife — drew renewed scrutiny after a photo was released showing Mnuchin taking in the eclipse with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) at Fort Knox.
Treasury officials have defended the day-long jaunt as “official government travel” and dismissed the suggestion that it was planned to coincide with the celestial event.
