Boy, 1, dies in shower steam bath
A BROOKLYN toddler died after he was left in a sweltering, steam filled bathroom to treat a cough, police sources said Friday.
The father of the 1-year-old boy told police his son Mordechai Halpern woke up with a cough inside their home on E. 2nd St. in Kensington about 3:30 a.m. Thursday .
The 27-year-old father gave the baby a bottle filled with water, lemon juice and sugar but the cough persisted so he strapped the boy into his stroller, covered him with a blanket, took him to the bathroom and turned on the shower.
He told police he only used enough hot water to generate the same amount of steam as a humidifier. He closed the shower curtain and put the stroller by the toilet.
The child’s 22-year-old mother found him unconscious and he was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he died. His body temperature was 108 degrees, sources said.
Cops do not believe the father intended to harm his son, sources said.
