Shed a tear for a pier
Never now will New York City enjoy what was to have been a magnificent green grove concert pier on the shore of Hudson River Park, the generous gift of media magnate Barry Diller and fashion superstar spouse Diane von Furstenberg. After being worn down by opponents who can be counted on the fingers of one hand, Diller pulled the plug on his $150-million-plus vision for Pier55, a public-private park and performance space that would have burst with world-class music, theater and dance on three stages. We won’t give the nitpicking naysayers the attention they crave here. Rather, their names should be engraved on a plaque installed next to the current blight — a tombstone for what might have been.
