S.I. baby death ruled a murder
THE JANUARY death of a baby boy on Staten Island, whose mother and grandmother brought him into the hospital more than a day after he’d already died, has been deemed a homicide, cops said Monday.
Dameen Mohammed was just 7 months old and severely dehydrated and malnourished when his mother, Anwar Jawad, 25, carried him into NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn on Jan. 7. He weighed only 8 pounds — about 10 pounds below the average weight for a baby that age.
Dameen’s death was reclassified as a homicide on Thursday, police said. Authorities have not made any arrests.
Jawad, 25, told police that Dameen looked sick at her home on Elie Court in New Springville.
But instead of taking the child to the hospital, she drove him over the Verrazano Bridge and into Bensonhurst to seek her mother’s advice. Dameen, who had bruising on his back, had been dead for more than 24 hours when they brought him to NYU Langone.
