CITY COUNCIL Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and three members of Congress were arrested protesting outside Trump Tower Tuesday for protections for young immigrants threatened by an order from President Trump.

Reps. Adriano Espaillat (D-Manhattan), Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Mark-Viverito were among about 10 people who sat down in the street on Fifth Ave. near the tower, and got cuffed after refusing to move.

“We are here to defend our immigrant communities,” Mark-Viverito said before the arrest, in which her hands were secured in plastic cuffs and she was loaded into a Department of Correction bus with other protesters.

“We don’t want families to be divided,” she said. “Trump’s policy goes against what the majority of this nation supports and believes in. It goes against our values.”

The group called on Congress to pass the Dream Act — which would offer legal status to people brought to the United States illegally as children — without the added border security expected to be included in a deal between President Trump and congressional Democrats. Trump ordered an end

Deferred Action for to Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, an Obama administration program that offered similar protections through executive order. But Trump delayed enactment by six months and has since waffled on the issue, saying he’s open to a compromise with Democrats.

“They deserve to stay in America,” Espaillat said of the DACA beneficiaries, known as Dreamers. “They are workers, soldiers in armed forces.”

It’s become relatively common in recent years for city pols to get arrested in shows of civil disobedience in support of favored social justice causes.
