Renewal of hope with Hunter help
HUNTER COLLEGE opened a one-stopshopping fair Tuesday for students hoping to renew their applications to stay in the U.S. under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.
The Trump administration set a hard deadline of Oct. 5 for recipients to apply for another two years of residency.
The students, known as Dreamers, got free legal advice on their applications, plus all the required photos and the $500 needed to submit the paperwork, said Hunter College president Jennifer Raab.
Hunter has 130 Dreamers — unauthorized immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. DACA, created by President Barack Obama’s executive order in 2012, prevents Dreamers from being deported but does not grant permanent residency. President Trump rescinded the program Sept. 5 and gave Congress six months to OK it.
