Suit: NYPD lying about BLM spying
A CONTENTIOUS case over NYPD surveillance of Black Lives Matter protesters at Grand Central Terminal has escalated to charges the department is lying.
Lawyers for protester James Logue filed court papers Wednesday accusing the NYPD of telling “purposeful” lies, made “unprecedented and illegal” requests to the court and submitted “intentionally misleading” sworn statements.
“The vast majority of what the (NYPD) placed before this court has been untrustworthy,” Logue’s attorney David Thompson wrote.
In February, Justice Manuel Mendez ordered the NYPD to give Logue surveillance records of protests in 2014 and 2015.
The NYPD handed over some materials revealing undercover officers infiltrated the ranks of protesters so they could get text messages from the group’s leaders. But Thompson says the NYPD flouted the judge’s order by withholding footage from stationary cameras, among other information.
“I’ve gotten so fed up talking about lying without using the word, which is what they’re doing,” Thompson told the Daily News.
A Law Department spokesman said the NYPD had complied with the judge’s order.
