Trying to lose? Johnson

- BY DANIEL POPPER

Suck for Sam? Frozen for Rosen? None of the above, says Jets owner Christopher Johnson. In his first meeting with the media since taking over for his older brother Woody Johnson — who is serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom — Christopher Johnson on Wednesday dispelled the notion that his team is tanking the 2017 season to land a franchise quarterback in the draft.

“It couldn’t be further from the truth,” Johnson said at the Jets’ Florham Park facility. “I want to win every game. Every player in that locker room wants to win. And what you’re seeing, I think, are growing pains. These are young guys. There are some older guys on the team, and some of them are doing an extraordinary job. But I think you’re going to see this team get better and better and better. That’s what I’m looking for, and we are definitely not tanking.”

Still, the perception exists for a reason. The Jets and general manager Mike Maccagnan parted ways with a slew of veterans this offseason — namely Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Nick Mangold and David Harris — leaving Todd Bowles with a barren and young roster that has and will continue to struggle against legitimate NFL talent.

Which begs the question: How can Johnson properly evaluate Todd Bowles this season considering the roster he’s been given?

Bowles is in the third year of a four-year contract, and the Jets will almost definitely make a decision on his future this offseason. Teams rarely allow a head coach to enter the final year of his deal without offering an extension or parting ways, for fear of a lame-duck situation.

Whatever the outcome, Christopher Johnson said he will be the one determining the fates of both Bowles and Maccagnan after the season. Woody Johnson completely detached himself from the football decision-making process after being sworn in in late August, according to Christopher. Upon departing, Woody Johnson told his brother: “It’s your team. Don’t mess it up.”
