Former Yank Mondesi gets 8-year sentence

-

Former Yankee outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday for corruption he took part in while mayor of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic.

Mondesi, who was mayor of San Cristobal from 2010 to 2016, was also fined 60 million pesos for the corruption, according to a report.

During the 2010 election, he ran as part of the Dominican Liberation Party but later switched sides and joined the Dominican Revolutionary Party.

Mondesi was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1994 with the Dodgers and a year later made his only All-Star Game appearance.

He was traded from the Blue Jays to the Yankees in 2002 and was moved to the Diamondbacks just a season later.

Mondesi’s son, who has the same name as him, currently plays for the Royals.

Latif Blessing scored midway through the first half, Daniel Salloi added a breakaway goal in the second and host Sporting Kansas City held on to beat the Red Bulls 2-1 for its fourth U.S. Open Cup title.

Blessing’s header in the 25th minute put Sporting KC ahead to stay. The Red Bulls’ Michael Murillo had just won a free kick, but Kansas City quickly cleared and went on the counter-attack. Graham Zusi got the ball on the wing, and the U.S. national team mainstay curled in a cross that the Blessing managed to connect with between four defenders.

Mexico’s soccer federation has canceled all first-division games this weekend as stadiums are being used as relief centers after the country’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake.

The federation announced Wednesday that there would be no games in the 10th round of the Apertura tournament or any other professional competition, including the women’s league.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has donated $100,000 to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund started by Texans pass-rusher J.J. Watt, and New England coach Bill Belichick has pitched in $50,000.

Watt called the donations “incredibly kind gestures (that) ... show what type of people they are.”

Harvey slammed South Texas with torrential rain that flooded parts of Houston and nearby cities, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes.

Watt initially hoped to raise $100,000 but blew through that goal on his way to $37 million.
