Stafford goal powers Devils over Rangers

In Newark, Drew Stafford’s go-ahead goal with 5:36 left in regulation pushed the Devils to a 2-1 win over the Rangers Saturday night. Joseph Blandisi also scored for the Devils, and Cory Schneider stopped 17 shots. Reserve goaltender Brandon Halverson allowed Stafford’s goal on nine third period shots to take the loss.

Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves in the first two periods. Brandon Crawley scored for the Rangers.

NYCFC DRAWS

New York’s Maxi- miliano Moralez and Houston’s Mauro Manotas scored early goals and the Dynamo and NYCFC battled to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The game was moved to Pratt & Whitney Stadium because of a scheduling conflict at Yankee Stadium. Moralez picked up his fifth goal in the sixth minute when he flicked a header inside the near post off a perfect service from the right side by Andraz Struna. Just 10 minutes later Manotas tallied his ninth after a quick restart just outside the top of the box, chipping the ball past New York keeper Sean Johnson.

NADAL & FED DOUBLE UP

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer joined forces to win the doubles in the new Laver Cup.

They teamed up for the first time to defeat Sam Querrey and Jack Sock 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 in the team event between Europe and the rest of the world. “It was unbelievab­le,” Nadal said.

The inaugural Laver Cup is at Prague’s O2 Arena on an unusual black hard court.

BARCEL-OWN-A WINS!

Barcelona was helped by two own goals from Girona as it eased to a 3-0 win and kept its perfect record in the Spanish league. Barcelona increased its lead of the league to four points after Atletico Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 to leapfrog the Andalucian club into second place.

l Manchester United will review CCTV footage from its match against Southampto­n on Saturday to identify supporters who ignored the club’s request to stop performing an offensive chant about forward Romelu Lukaku. The controvers­ial chant was heard last week at Old Trafford in the Champions League and was quickly condemned by the anti-discrimina­tion group Kick It Out.
