Guilty of slay in bike hit
A HIT-AND-RUN driver who slammed into a Williamsburg cyclist and dragged his body for almost 20 feet was convicted by a Brooklyn jury Monday.
Deadly driver Juan Maldonado was on the lam for four months after running over Matthew von Ohlen on July 2, 2016.
Von Ohlen was riding in a bike lane on Grand St. when Maldonado blew a red light, swerved into the lane and hit him with his black Chevy Camaro at the intersection of Manhattan Ave.
Von Ohlen, who owned a 24-hour bicycle repair shop, died of his injuries at Bellevue Hospital.
Maldonado, 56, was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident without reporting and reckless driving.
Prosecutors said part of the crash was captured on surveillance video.
“The jury has now agreed that this was not an accident, but a crime, and this defendant will be held responsible for his recklessness that cost an innocent man his life,” said Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
Maldonado faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Suzanne Mondo on Oct. 18.
