BLM leader – I’ll sue NYPD in roughing-up

- Christina Carrega

THE LOCAL leader of Black Lives Matter is expected to file a civil lawsuit against the NYPD, claiming police falsely arrested him and roughed him up during a peaceful protest earlier this year.

Walter (Hawk) Newsome was facing up to a year for resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and two counts of disorderly conduct — all misdemeanor charges.

The 40-year-old Newsome, president of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, had been arrested during a protest against the Trump administration’s immigration ban at Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village Feb. 11.

On Wednesday, Manhattan prosecutors decided to dismiss all the charges if he does not get arrested within the next six months.

But Newsome is now planning to file a lawsuit for the injuries he sustained while being taken into custody, his attorney Sanford Rubenstein said after the court appearance.

Newsome, who was arrested along with four other protesters, said they only received summonses and were released while he was put through the system.
