Gwas in two places at once during a performance of Broadway’s “Come From Away.” Bass (photo), who was American Airlines’ first female captain and their third woman pilot ever, attended a Tuesday night performance of the Tony-winning play, in which she’s also a character.

Seated among 150 female fliers at the Schoenfeld Theatre, the retired Boeing 777 pilot who was ordered to land her Dallas-bound flight from Paris in Gander, Newfoundland, during the 2001 terror attacks, watched herself being played by actress whose portrayal of Bass earned her a Tony nomination. The show is about a small Canadian town that hosted stranded travelers whose planes were ordered out of the sky on 9/11.

And when Colella sang one of the show’s closing numbers, in which she belts out the line “First female American captain in history!” the female pilots seated around Bass “stopped the show” with raucous cheers.

“It was exhilarating to hear the entire theater burst into applause in the middle of my song,” Colella told us when asked about the 150-person outburst.

Bass, now 66, retired from flying in 2008 after serving 25 years as a captain. She told one theater insider that it was “a thrilling moment” to have been surrounded by her fellow fliers for that memorable event.

We’re also told that three of the female pilots in the crowd, all of whom are members of the International Society of Women Airline Pilots, were roommates with Bass in New York while she was attending flight school. Before the show got underway, the pilots grabbed an early dinner at Sardis. This isn’t the first time “Come From Away” has attracted VIPs. In March, Canadian Prime Minister
