YANKSGAMEDAY

-

The “Toe-night Show” was going well on Thursday — until the Yankees fell apart in the fifth inning of a 9-6 loss to the Rays at Yankee Stadium.

Their three-game winning streak is over. Their faint hopes of winning the AL East pretty much are too.

The Bombers allowed seven runs in the frame, as Sonny Gray’s final regular-season start didn’t go well, while Gary Sanchez’s season-long struggles with blocking behind the plate cost the team yet again.

The Red Sox also lost to the Astros — with the Yankees failing to take advantage — meaning their magic number to clinch the division is now one.

Gray was ultimately charged with six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. He walked five, and the Rays made a lot of hard contact. It was the second time the 27-year-old failed to get through the fifth inning since being acquired by the Yankees.

Wilson Ramos delivered the big blow in the fifth, ripping a two-run homer off Gray that gave the Rays a 5-4 lead.

Sanchez committed his MLB-leading 16th passed ball in the fifth, allowing a run to score. He also committed his 13th error on a wild pitch by Gray in the frame that also allowed a run to score.

It is at least worth wondering whether Joe Girardi might decide to start veteran Austin Romine at catcher in the probable Tuesday AL wild-card game and move Sanchez, the slugging 24-year-old, to DH.

Brett Gardner (No. 21), Aaron Judge (No. 51), Greg Bird (No. 9) and Aaron Hicks (No. 15) all homered in the defeat.
