Chuck: Move it on bus grade system
A BUS SAFETY rating system has already been signed into law but isn’t being implemented, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday, calling for reform in the wake of last month’s deadly Queens crash.
The urgent need for more information about bus companies was made clear by the accident caused by a Dahlia Travel and Tours bus driver who blew a red light, smashing into an MTA bus, Schumer said.
Dahlia driver Raymond Mong, who had been fired by the MTA after a drunken-driving conviction, was killed in the Sept. 18 crash along with two pedestrians.
“We need a federal letter-grade system for bus safety that mirrors the one we have for New York City restaurants, because the public is in the dark on just who is violating the law and how dangerous their charter may be,” Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.
A safety ratings system for buses was signed into law in 2012 but never implemented.
