‘ISIS’ stab, van attack in Canada
A TERRORIST used an SUV to ram a police constable outside a football game in Canada, then stabbed him before getting behind the wheel of a U-Haul van and plowing into a crowd, authorities said Sunday.
A black-and-white ISIS flag was found in a white Chevy Malibu used to slam through police barricade outside Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, around 8 p.m. Saturday.
The vehicle struck Constable Mike Chernyk while he stood next to his police cruiser, Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht told reporters.
Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 30, of Edmonton, was taken into custody. Authorities say Sharif, a Somali national who was known to police, acted alone.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident a “terror attack.”
“We cannot — and will not — let violent extremism take root in our communities,” Trudeau said.
Chernyk was treated for his injuries and released.
Sharif crashed into four pedestrians before his arrest, police said. Two have been released from the hospital and one victim was in stable condition.
