EVERY NEW mass shooting — and there are far too many — engenders the same old dynamic. People remark on the obvious disparity between the reaction to an act of terrorism committed by a Muslim (which is often framed as part of a larger global threat) and the reaction to violence by a white shooter (he is mentally ill or a mere criminal). President Trump, of course, has played right into this dynamic. After Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people at an Orlando night club in 2016, Trump quickly tied the attack to “radical Islamic terrorism.” His speech on Sunday night’s attack in Las Vegas didn't mention “terrorism.” This could be the result of Trump’s often expressed antipathy toward Muslims and his tendency to give white supremacist types a pass.
