‘Goodfella’ Morrie is dead at 89
CHUCK LOW, who played the doomed wig shop owner and hapless crook Morrie in “Goodfellas,” the classic mob movie in which he appeared alongside his good friend Robert De Niro, has died. He was 89.
Low — a New York City real estate developer — got into the acting business after De Niro became one of his tenants in a Tribeca loft. Their friendship later blossomed into Low’s career as an actor, with roles in “Goodfellas,” “The Mission,” “The King of Comedy,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” “Scent of a Woman” and “The Sopranos.”
Low (inset) served 30 years in the Army reserves and four years on active duty, attaining the rank of a major. He also spent eight years in the National Guard before entering the family business — developing and manufacturing marine instruments.
In the 1960s, he decided to get his brokerage license and began converting industrial buildings in Tribeca into lofts.
Low’s best-known performance is the wig salesman Morrie, who got whacked by Joe Pesci’s Tommy DeVito — with a screwdriver to the back of the head — in the 1990 Martin Scorsese classic.
Low, a New York native, died Sept. 18 at a nursing home in New Jersey.
