D.C. shafting N.Y. even more on aid

- Kenneth Lovett

ALBANY — With President Trump and Congress considering tax and health care reforms that some say would hurt New York, a new report says the gap between what New Yorkers send Washington in taxes and what it receives back in federal services has doubled in just three years.

The report by state Controller Thomas DiNapoli found that New York in 2016 received 84 cents in services for every $1 it sent to Washington.

Overall, the state sent nearly $41 billion more to Washington than it received back in federal spending, DiNapoli said.

That's more than double the $19.9 billion gap in 2013.

Nationally, the average return for all states in 2016 was $1.18 per tax dollar sent to D.C.

DiNapoli said the feds “should consider this imbalance as they debate proposed budget and policy changes that could significantly impact New York and other states.”
