SHAME ON YOU, AMAZON

‘Anorexia’ hoodie ripped

- BY ARIEL SCOTTI

ONLINE RETAIL giant Amazon is getting hefty backlash over a pro-anorexia sweatshirt.

The hoodie (photo), sold by Amazon vendor ArturoBuch, reads: “Anorexia: Like Bulimia, except with self control.”

It “runs small,” according to roughly half of Amazon customers who weighed in on the fit, and sells for between $23.48 and $29.78.

About 90% of the hoodie’s reviews on the site are singlestarred, negative ratings.

“Jokes about eating disorders are dangerous and cliché,” Claire Mysko, CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association, said in a statement. “This hoodie propagates the myth that eating disorders are trivial and mere issues of willpower or self-control.”

“Stereotypes like this result in increased stigma and are barriers that prevent people from seeking help,” Mysko added. “Anorexia is not a ‘lifestyle choice,’ it is a mental health disorder with socio-biological influences. We ask that Amazon stand with those affected by these deadly illnesses and remove the sweatshirt from their store.”

An Amazon reviewer called Bethany posted that it was “disgusting and shameful (for) making a profit on an illness! This item should be removed!”

Another customer, commenting under the name Book Fairy, agreed. “This type of message damages the lives of the most susceptible members of our society,” the user wrote. “Making a profit by marketing eating disorders is pure evil.”

Social media users didn’t see the humor in the hoodie’s message either.

“This makes me so sad,” Twitter user @lightlypink wrote. “Anorexia silently kills a person on the inside and then kills their entire body. Take it down!”

“Tacky and extremely insensitive toward women who struggle with eating disorders,” @NatishaLance tweeted. “It is not a joke.”

And yet another user questioned its point.

“Who would even buy a hoodie like that?! Bizarre!,” wrote @Community_Moore.

Amazon declined to comment.
