The doctors who save the world

-

West Orange, N.J.: On Sept. 30, 1968, two brave doctors volunteering with the International Red Cross, working 16 hours a day while helping both injured Christians from Biafra and Muslim Nigerian federal troops, were savagely killed with their two medical assistants for no reason at all. Soon after that, Dr. Bernard Kouchner created MSF-Doctors Without Borders to honor those two heroic doctors.

I am shocked that most of the media are not saying a single word about it on the 49th anniversary. Moreover, they don’t even mention their names, just that “Doctors Without Borders were established to honor two doctors killed in Biafra.” Well, with my heart continuously broken for nearly 50 years, I will mention the names of my two colleagues who lost their lives while helping those in need.

Dr. Robert Carlsson from Sweden and Dr. Dragan Hercog from Yugoslavia were both 32 years old. Dragan was my best friend and classmate. Soon after we got our medical degrees, I went to help the poorest of the poor in the poorest Indian state of Orissa while being the only doctor in 250 square miles. I went through seven wars being shot at 15 times. Hercog soon went to help the very needy in Biafra, which had 3 million innocent souls killed for no reason. He was killed along with Carlsson while they were doing bravely what not many doctors ever did.

Doctors Without Borders is still doing a great job in many developing countries; I have collaborated with them in 40 African and 15 Asian nations. Rest in peace, my two late colleagues.

Tom Prvulovic, MD, MPH, DrPH professor of tropical diseases

A great American

Bayside: With all the negative B.S. about Hillary Clinton, she is still a great American. Shame!

Off your seats

Astoria: Every NFL stadium should stay empty until next year. Guaranteed, everybody will be standing for the national anthem next year. Joe Ametrano

Their flag, our flag

Denver, N.Y.: I am 95 years old and I love my flag and all that it stands for. I love to see it on display at homes as I drive by. In 1944, I landed on the beach at Normandy, stepping over bodies of young boys who also loved this flag. Half of the first wave came from the little town of Bedford, Va. I wonder how they feel seeing NFL idiots disrespecting our flag.

Games on

Brooklyn: In Major League Baseball, they have a rule that if your team makes the wild card and it loses one game, it is out of the playoffs. Being that baseball season is so long, they should have the wild-card playoff be a two-out-of-three game series. One game and out doesn’t seem fair. Barry Sandler

Clean up, kids!

Bronx: To Voicer Peter Cain: I’m glad I’m not the only one who has noticed the filthy streets and sidewalks. When I was a young girl 85 years ago, you were able to dine on a sidewalk, or in the street for that matter. Today you see nothing but empty beer cans, red cups and hard liquor bottles, and leftover pizza slices half eaten, mainly because of very intelligent college students. They can do all these disgusting things but do not have the intelligence to clean up. This is the cost of an education today? Money wasted. If you can pick up bottles and cans you can pick up a broom and shovel. You just may get an A-plus for housekeeping. Clara Falco

More, more!

Long Island City: I have to laugh at those who see America becoming great again. All I see becoming great is our rapidly growing population. Let’s not listen to anyone who means to deny us benefits of population growth. Just look at the joy it brings to many Asian countries.

Ride the buses out

Flushing: A thought about the recent Queens bus crash: I believe those huge tour buses should not go near the downtown area of Flushing but should be out near Citi Field. People could take a city bus or subway to get there. It is unsafe for them to be in very busy areas. Vivian Mall West Orange, N.J.: To Voicer Carmel Harrigan regarding Voicer Reba Shimansky’s demented, delusional, chaotic chatter. Back on Feb. 2, I responded to one of Reba’s letters to Voice of the People. I have since seen several letters published critical of this Upper West Side resident. When the Daily News failed to publish her rebuttal, she tracked me down and sent a letter to my home on Feb. 23. She just can’t accept anyone having an opinion different from hers. Carmel, you may now expect a letter from Reba. Bob Rivielle

Blame the parents

Oakland Gardens: You dumb parents who put up with your children bullying others are, to say the least, schmucks with earlaps. They deserve to be assaulted in most instances. Bullied people often attempt suicide. G-d help you uncaring parents.

Cut them off

Manchester, N.J.: To end the heroin epidemic, all you have to do is pass a law that says if you are caught dealing dope, the punishment is death by hanging 72 hours after arrest. Do it on TV so all can see. Addiction is destroying our children at an alarming rate. Time to stop all the B.S. in this country. Nancy Reagan was saying “Just say no to drugs” while her husband was dealing cocaine through the CIA. What a bunch of hypocrites. Gerard E. Dawson

Crossed at the Cross

Toms River, N.J.: To Voicer Mary O’Hara: I was dating a sailor in 1952. He got injured while in service and was being treated at St. Albans Hospital. When the Red Cross came through the ward, they were offering cigarettes and had the nerve to charge for them. I haven’t supported them in any way since then. How much does the president of that organization get for a salary?

Eleanor Paciulli

Trailing behind

Great Neck, L.I.: President Trump believes he is a modernday pied piper who just has to clap his hands and the world will follow. Some day he may discover that silence can also be golden.

Fred Feingold

Stay in your lane, prez

Scarsdale, N.Y.: Donald Trump should pay his taxes, try to communicate with North Korea, pay tribute to Puerto Rico and stay out of the NFL and NBA’s business. He doesn’t own a team. African Americans are mad at police killing blacks and receiving no convictions. Claude Young

Going down

Brooklyn: There was a saying during World War II: “Loose lips sink ships.” Well, President Trump has the loosest lips of any President in history. I just hope those loose lips don’t get us into a war. Arthur Mazlin

Geography lesson

Richmond Hill: Thanks, Mr. President, for the lesson in geography that Puerto Rico is an island INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS COMMITTEE surrounded by water. I must have missed that in my geography class. Also because of the water, you can’t just drive there. Gee, all this time I thought planes and ships went there. Silly me! Isn’t Haiti also on an island surrounded by water? I wonder how they received all the help, including from George W. Bush, Sean Penn and Bill Clinton in their last hurricane, with no trucks. Maybe you should ask them.

Dorothy Lewis

Stop the storms

Brooklyn: In our forecasts of hurricanes, tornadoes and other storms, is it at least possible rather than waiting for destruction to strike, to blast the centrifugal forces in the early stages of detection? We know when and where these storms are about to form. Why not create a blast at their very beginning to dissipate them, and save the cost of lives and property? Salvatore Dragotto

Nowhere to go

Brooklyn: Recently I went shopping. As I was nearing the supermarket, I noticed a building being erected. There was a sign that said “condo for rent.” Is that what Mayor de Blasio calls affordable housing? I do not want a condo, nor can I afford one. There are numerous individuals who feel the same way. I must move from my apartment because my landlord put individuals above and below me to harass me. There are no apartments available or the rents are too high. Arlene Pasko
