Dove pulls ad in furor over whitewash
DOVE SOAP is in some hot water.
Offended customers took to social media over a body wash ad with racist undertones on Dove’s Facebook page.
The since-deleted spot (inset) featured four photos arranged in a square. The first two pictured a black woman removing a brown shirt from her body. In the other two photos, she lifts up her shirt and becomes a smiling white woman, as if to imply that Dove’s body wash transformed her skin color.
In a Twitter post, Dove admitted it “missed the mark” in representing women of color, and on Facebook, it said the brand remains “committed to representing the beauty of diversity.”
“You can do better than ‘missed the mark.’ Flip + diminishing,” Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay wrote on Twitter.
