Tex. Tech student, 19, held in drug-tied shoot

A TEXAS TECH University police officer was shot and killed Monday night at campus police headquarters, a school official said.

The suspect, whom the police wanted to question in a drug case, escaped after the shooting and was later apprehended, authorities said.

“Earlier this evening, Texas Tech police made a student welfare check,” the school said in a statement shortly after the 7:45 p.m. shooting.

“Upon entering the room, officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers brought the suspect to the police station for standard debriefing. During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. The officer is deceased.”

University Police Chief Kyle Bonath told NBC News the suspect had been taken into custody and was being processed for jail on the drug evidence when “he produced a weapon — it has yet to be determined the details of that — and mortally wounded one of our officers.”

Suspect Hollis Daniels, 19, was tackled by a campus officer and arrested near Jones AT&T Stadium around 9:30 p.m.

The university had gone into a lockdown, using social media to tell students and staff to “shelter in place.”

The lockdown was lifted shortly after the arrest.

According to the Lubbock County sheriff’s office, Daniels is a freshman from Seguin, near San Antonio.

The officer’s identity was being withheld pending family notification.
