OBJ & SEASON BROKEN

- BY JOHN HEALY

ODELL Beckham Jr. will undergo surgery at some point this week to repair his broken ankle, the Giants announced on Monday.

Ben McAdoo, speaking on a conference call a day after the Giants’ 27-22 loss to the Chargers, said it is safe to say his star receiver’s season is over.

“I spoke to him after the game,” McAdoo said. “It’s a sad situation.”

The Giants also announced that Dwayne Harris would have surgery today to repair his broken foot. Both Harris and Beckham were placed on injured reserve.

Brandon Marshall announced Monday night on Instagram that his season was over. “Tomorrow I’ll have surgery ending year 12. I’m filled with mixed emotions. I wasn’t able to produce for my team the way I wanted to but this was my greatest year to date,” Marshall wrote. “This game has shown me who I really am good and bad. This game has given me the opportunity to grow as a man, father, husband, teammate, leader... I’m so thankful for this game.”

Sterling Shepard has been ruled day-to-day with a sprained ankle. The Giants have also ruled LB Jonathan Casillas (burner) and S Landon Collins (ankle) as day-to-day.

Beckham was carted off the field Sunday after he landed and twisted his ankle underneath a hit from Chargers DB Casey Hayward with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

The Giants had the lead at the time and were trying to secure the victory, but Eli Manning’s throw was a tad high and went through Beckham’s fingertips.

It is the same ankle Beckham injured in preseason, on a similar play. That injury sidelined him for three weeks.

As far as any long-term effect to Beckham’s health, McAdoo said he has not gotten into any of that.

The slew of injuries to the wide receivers has also led the Giants to re-sign Tavarres King to the active roster and promote Travis Rudolph from the practice squad. They are also working out Darius Powe, who was cut after training camp.

“We have some guys on the practice squad, some guys on the roster that we bump them up and give them some opportunities,” McAdoo said. “Next man up. Hate to see it, but it’s part of the game.”

McAdoo was asked if bringing in Victor Cruz, who was cut by the Bears before the season, was an option. “To my knowledge, he is not an option,” he said. “Never say never.”

The addition of new wide receivers and bumping guys up from the practice squad could give the Giants a sense of what other talent they may have on their hands as they try to make sense of an 0-5 season.

It is possible their top receiver in next week’s Sunday night primetime matchup against the Broncos in Denver could be Roger Lewis Jr., a secondyear player undrafted out of Bowling Green. Seeing what guys like him and Rudolph — who showed flashes in the preseason — can do may be all the Giants have left to look forward to in what has been a disastrous season.
