Pow! Smash! at comic book store

- John Annese

A CRAZED MAN took a header out of the second-story window of a Manhattan comic book store Tuesday, police said.

He took the leap from Midtown Comics on W. 40th St. and Seventh Ave. at about 4 p.m., cops said.

The man “was perhaps in a drug-fueled rampage” and causing trouble in other businesses, including a Lenwich sandwich shop, said Gerry Gladston, the co-owner of Midtown Comics.

Gladston said he arrived after the man ran into the store and barreled toward a stairwell connecting the shop’s two levels.

“He was running around there fast and just bolted toward the window and jumped out,” Gladston said.

“He wasn’t wearing a cape or anything” when he bypassed a Batman statue and went through a plate glass window, Gladston said. “Somehow I guess he was OK and walked away,” Gladston said. “I’m very glad he’s OK. He stood up and walked away. I’m not sure if I can do that.”

It turns out the villain didn’t steal anything, but he’s a known shoplifter, police said Tuesday.

A security guard spotted him and asked him to sign an affidavit saying he’d never return. He agreed at first, police said, but bit the guard and made a bee line for the window.

Police took the man, who is in his 20s, to Bellevue Hospital with a fractured hip and a concussion. His identity was not released. Charges were pending.
