Josh: Tom oldie but goodie

-

THIS Sunday, 38-year-old Josh McCown will actually match up with an opposing quarterback who’s older than him. “It will be nice for once,” McCown quipped Wednesday in the Jets locker room.

The bad news for McCown is that opposing quarterback is Tom Brady, who at 40 years old continues to defy the laws of aging. Brady leads the NFL in passing yards through five games (1,702). He’s second in QB rating (112.0) and has thrown 11 touchdowns to one interception.

“Brady will probably be playing long after I’m retired the way he’s going right now,” Todd Bowles said.

There is one glimmer of hope for the Jets: Brady has missed two straight practices because of a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder. But the signal-caller said Wednesday he expects to play Sunday without any limitations when the Jets and Patriots face off at MetLife Stadium.

The winner takes over sole possession of first place in the AFC East.

“I feel really good,” Brady said on a conference call. “I’m excited for this weekend. I’m not too worried.”

McCown, now in his 15th season, voiced respect for his counterpart.

“Tom has set a standard and a mark for quarterbacks in our league,” the Jets starter said. “What he’s been able to do is nothing short of remarkable and to a degree, it’s special to go against him because he’s widely regarded as the best to ever play. In my opinion, probably rightfully so.”

INJURY REPORT

Running back Bilal Powell (calf) and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson (shoulder, toe) both missed practice Wednesday in Florham Park.

Wilkerson — who hasn’t recorded a sack this season — was previously dealing with a shoulder injury he sustained in Oakland, and he added a toe issue to his growing list of ailments in the Cleveland win this past weekend.

Powell, meanwhile, suffered his injury at the end of the first half of Sunday’s victory. Bowles said Powell’s status is “up in the air.”
