Fliers slam immig probe on airplane

- Andrew Keshner

THE FEDS HAVE really ruffled their feathers.

A group of fliers are suing federal authorities for asking for papers as they disembarked from a domestic flight at Kennedy Airport, according to papers filed Thursday in Brooklyn Federal Court.

Passengers on a Delta flight from San Francisco to New York in February said they were forced to provide identification before being let into the terminal.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the suit against the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection on behalf of nine travelers. The lawsuit argues that demand for ID was an unreasonable, unjustified search.

A day after the incident, the feds said they were looking for a specific person with a removal order and didn’t find the person.

The ACLU says there was no excuse for the agents’ behavior.

“The officers did not have any legal justification for seizing and searching these passengers,” ACLU Deputy Legal Director Cecillia Wang said in a statement.

A Customs spokesman said the agency does not comment on pending lawsuits.
