Chelsea bomb case to the jury
THEY’RE ON the verge of a verdict.
The Manhattan federal jury pondering the case of a radical bombing suspect charged with attacks in Chelsea and the Jersey Shore last year nearly reached a decision Friday in just two hours.
“We are very near a consensus but would like more time,” the jurors said in a note to U.S. District Court Judge Richard Berman. “May we return Monday for more deliberation?”
The panel received the case against Ahmad Rahimi, 29, of Elizabeth, N.J., at 3:05 p.m. and wrapped for the day at 5:15 p.m. They will return to court Monday morning to resume talks.
Thirty people were injured in the Sept. 17, 2016, explosion on busy W. 23rd St. in Chelsea — the third homemade bomb planted during the day by Rahimi, prosecutors charged. A second Chelsea bomb was defused by cops.
The deliberations began after Rahimi’s attorneys appealed for a last-minute, long-shot mistrial. Berman did not rule on the motion.
