Let charters teach teaching
Success Academy schools, where 95% of students pass state math tests and 84% pass state English tests, just won the freedom to train their own teachers — as did New York’s other proven networks of charter schools. No longer will charters be forced to rely solely on traditional schools of education, which have, to say the least, a checkered record of preparing educators.
City and state teachers unions are, of course, suing, claiming charters are lowering standards in ways that will hurt kids.
“Every student needs a highly trained professional,” says UFT president Michael Mulgrew.
Follow this logic: Charter students must have a teacher trained the old-fashioned way in every classroom — or their achievement might slip. Worse come to worst, it could even slip all the way down to levels in their district school peers.
