Fed assist for Iowa in trans teen’s murder
ATTORNEY GENERAL Jeff Sessions has deployed a federal hatecrimes lawyer to Iowa to assist in the prosecution of a man charged with fatally shooting a transgender teen last year.
Christopher Perras will help prosecute Jorge Sanders-Galvez, 22, who is charged with killing Kedarie Johnson, a 16-year-old Burlington, Iowa, student in March 2016, The New York Times reported Sunday. The trial is set to begin Oct. 24. It’s an unusual move by Sessions, given that his Justice Department rolled back a policy that protected transgender people from workplace discrimination. Sessions additionally rescinded a policy that allowed transgender students to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identities.
The AG has also vowed to focus on hate crimes.
