gM gave $ as gov steered biz to it

A GM POLITICAL action committee donated more than $17,000 to Gov. Cuomo three months before he announced the company would be the first to test self-driving cars in the state, campaign finance records show.

Cuomo (photo), who announced the company’s plans for the tests on Tuesday, received a $17,500 donation to his 2018 reelection committee from the General Motors Co. PAC on July 10.

The company will be the first to test fully automated vehicles in the state, Cuomo’s office said Tuesday.

GM previously donated smaller amounts to Cuomo — the PAC gave $3,000 to the same reelection committee on Oct. 31, 2016, records show, and another $3,500 in 2011.

“No donation of any size influences administrative actions — period,” Cuomo spokeswoman Dani Lever said. “Any auto manufacturer who meets DMV’s criteria will be able to test vehicles, so the insinuation that GM was accorded any favoritism is not only obnoxious, but absurd.”

In a statement, GM said its PAC supports “candidates who foster sound business policies” and the donation “has no connection to our business decision to test our autonomous vehicles in New York.”
