Stands by coach, GM

-

“I think it’s too early to say that,” he said. “Obviously, he’s in a difficult situation right now being 1-5. Part of being a head coach is how you deal with situations like that.”

Mara said he visited Odell Beckham Jr., in the hospital last week after OBJ underwent surgery to repair his fractured left ankle. He said the injury doesn’t impact the Giants’ desire to get him signed to a new contract.

“I don’t think it will have any effect because I think he will have a full recovery,” he said.

He added that the Giants don’t need to see Beckham at 100% before making a big financial commitment. “I think our medical people feel pretty strongly that he’ll make a full recovery,” Mara said. “Knowing him, he will work so hard to get back. He has so much pride.”

That doesn’t mask the Giants’ disappointment with Beckham’s immaturity, highlighted by his impersonation of a peeing dog in Philadelphia after scoring a touchdown in the third game of the season.

“Well, listen, I was obviously disappointed with his behavior in Philadelphia. I spoke to him about that. He heard me,” Mara said. “Unfortunately, he got hurt after that. He’s maturing. I think we all had hoped that the maturity would come a little faster than it has been. I’ve spoken to him. I saw him in the hospital last week. He’s in a good place and I think he will come back stronger than ever.”

Although no team has bounced back from 0-5 to make the playoffs, Mara has not thrown in the white flag on the season. “I’m not going to pull the Jim Mora quote out,” he said.

Mora in 2001 when the Colts were 4-6 after a 40-21 loss to the 49ers: “What’s that? Playoffs? Don’t talk about playoffs. You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game. Another game.”

“I just want to win the next game,” Mara said. “That’s all I’m thinking about. I haven’t given up on anything.”

If they don’t win Sunday against Seattle, then the bitching and moaning will be back in session.
