Judge: No to dough, Bro

- Andrew Keshner

A BROOKLYN federal judge says a locked up Martin Shkreli cannot have access to his $5 million bail money.

After the Pharma Bro was tossed into a federal jail last month Shkreli’s lawyers asked Judge Kiyo Matsumoto to release the hefty sum that was once collateral to guarantee Shkreli always made it to court. Shkreli, 34, was jailed last month over a $5,000 reward he offered on social media for a strand of Hillary Clinton’s hair.

He had been out on bail following his conviction in August on three counts of securities fraud. Pharma Bro is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while he awaits sentencing.

Matsumoto on Thursday turned down the defense request to release the funds, noting federal laws say courts can’t release bond money between a verdict and a sentence unless it’s shown that any fine or penalty can’t be imposed or the defendant “would suffer an undue hardship.”
