Serpico backs Cy’s opponent
FAMED CORRUPTION fighter Frank Serpico has endorsed a long-shot write-in candidate vying to unseat Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. in next month’s election.
Serpico said Peter Gleason, a lawyer who’s worked as an NYPD cop and FDNY firefighter, earned his support for “fighting against corruption in the system.”
“He’s represented whistleblower police and firefighters who have been discriminated against," said Serpico, an ex-cop best known for exposing widespread NYPD corruption in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“I have no better person in mind that would run for district attorney and actually make some changes.”
Serpico’s work led to a largescale probe by the Knapp Commission, which investigated the systematic failings. His feats were memorialized in the 1973 classic “Serpico,” starring Al Pacino.
