None of Bill’s bus-iness

-

We thought it was wrong in 2014 for Mayor de Blasio to undermine a fairly won competitive bid by pushing through the City Council $42 million to boost the wages of privately employed yellow school bus drivers and matrons. So did Councilman Dan Garodnick, who was one of only six to vote no as 41 others passed it.

But neither us nor Garodnick could have imagined that de Blasio would take that single vote for a single year’s payment and turn it into permanent practice. The following year, the administration — this time without a Council vote — handed out $28.1 million. Then last year, another $32.9 million.

Seeking to go four for four, the Department of Small Business Services is preparing to dole out another round of cash, $38 million, by executive fiat.

Garodnick rightly objects. We do too, both to the indiscriminate loosening of public purse-strings and to the galling bypassing of the Council.
