Student busted in brutal R train beat
A BROOKLYN high-schooler surrendered to cops after he beat an older straphanger in a rush-hour argument over scuffed sneakers, authorities said Monday.
Lamaj Rustem, 18, delivered a beatdown Friday to Anthony Hamoui, 30, after the older man objected when the teen stepped on his pristine kicks on a southbound R train in Sunset Park, cops said.
“The victim cannot breathe on his own, and he could still die,” said Assistant District Attorney Tziyonah Langsam said at Rustem’s arraignment Monday night on assault and other charges.
The teen’s lawyer, Lance Lazzaro, described Hamoui as the aggressor, and noted he has prior arrests and an open drug case.
“The victim had his foot stepped on. He goes crazy,” Lazzaro said. “My client defends himself.”
Rustem was released on $15,000 bail.
