Housing backers rip B’klyn pol
HOUSING advocates are blasting a Brooklyn city councilwoman for threatening to block an affordable housing project slated for Brownsville.
The proposal for Edwin’s Place would build 125 apartments in the Brooklyn neighborhood, 78 of them supportive housing with special services for the formerly homeless.
But Councilwoman Darlene Mealy (D-Brooklyn) is opposing the plan, saying too many of the apartments are studios. The Council traditionally gives veto power to the local member, so her opposition could kill it.
“Do not make a mistake and vote no,” said the Rev. Dexter Henderson of East Brooklyn Congregations, who said the group would send 50 people to Mealy’s Brooklyn office to protest her stance, and urged the Council to pass the plan despite her opposition.
EBC and the Metro Industrial Areas Foundation staged a major rally at City Hall earlier this month urging Mayor de Blasio to do more for affordable housing.
“Here, the mayor and the city are doing their job. They’ve provided the land, the subsidies and the support,” Henderson said. Mealy said she still has concerns, and the project would be too similar to a homeless shelter.
