Russian cyberbig: NSA spy tool grab an oopsie
UM, IT WAS AN accident.
The head of a Russian software company says its anti-virus program unintentionally scraped National Security Agency surveillance tools off a contractor’s computer.
The NSA contractor with highly classified material had his computer “backdoored” after downloading a pirated copy of Microsoft Office, Kapersky Labs told The Associated Press.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that Kremlinbacked hackers were able to steal information on U.S. cyberdefenses using Kapersky anti-virus software from a worker who brought tools onto his personal computer.
Company founder Eugene Kapersky denied working with the Kremlin, and said the files were destroyed as soon as they were discovered.
The company said the contractor had turned off his anti-virus protection before downloading an infected version of Microsoft Office.
