8 months for FIFA fraud
6A FORMER Guatemalan soccer official was sentenced Wednesday to eight months behind bars for his role in the far-reaching FIFA corruption case.
Hector Trujillo accepted money from a Miami sports marketing company in exchange for media and marketing rights to Guatemala’s home qualifiers for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Trujillo, the ex-general secretary of the Guatemalan soccer federation and former judge in the Central American country, admitted to wire fraud and wire fraud conspiracy in June.
Brooklyn federal prosecutors said Trujillo, 63, cried during his sentencing. “Why did I accept this money? Looking back, I think I was blinded,” Trujillo confessed.
Trujillo is forfeiting $175,000 under the terms of his plea deal and has to pay back $415,000 to the Guatemalan soccer federation.
