Joe, GM to talk skipper’s future

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

— ESPN Stats and Info JOE GIRARDI’S future with the Yankees remains uncertain, though perhaps another meeting with Brian Cashman will clear that up.

The two will meet again on Thursday in the Bronx to discuss the 53-year-old manager’s status, according to a report from FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman.

Girardi and Cashman exited Yankee Stadium within minutes of each other on Wednesday, with Girardi leaving at 1:10 p.m. in an SUV.

There has been silence from many within the organization on the topic, leading rumors to swirl, though nothing seems concrete as of yet.

Both Cashman and Girardi will see their contracts expire at the end of the month, with the GM seen as essentially a lock to return after leading the Bombers back to contention way faster than expected, with a homegrown core in place and several other exciting prospects on the way.

Girardi, who has been under a fouryear, $16 million deal, has managed the Yankees for the past decade, getting them within a win of the World Series this season. The Bombers last won it all with Girardi at the helm in 2009.

But there have been rumblings about whether the family man would want to walk away. And Girardi had said he planned to meet with his family at season’s end to discuss his future. There have also been reports that money could be the difference between the two sides.

“He’s very excited about this team,” Girardi’s older brother, George Girardi, a Fort Collins, Colo. physician, told the Daily News on Wednesday. “He hasn’t discussed his situation much with me, but I know Joe thinks this Yankees team has a lot of talent, and a chance to possibly win at least a couple World Series titles.

“It’s not about the money for Joe. Whether the Yankees want him back or not, I know he wants to manage, but he would never make it about money,” George Girardi added. “He’s comfortable enough if he never works again.”

Girardi took over before the 2008 season, the last at the old Yankee Stadium. Yankee owner Hal Steinbrenner said during the postseason on the “Michael Kay Show” that he would not make a decision on Girardi’s and Cashman’s future until after the season.
